A Japanese man has died after chocking on an onigiri rice ball during a speed-eating competition.
The man, who has not been named, fell unconscious at the event in the Shiga prefecture city of Hikone.
The incident occurred as the man attempted to eat five onigiri rice balls in three minutes.
Contest organisers told Japanese media that the man died three days after choking and falling into a coma, without regaining consciousness.
Speed-eating contests are popular events in Japan, with the country being home to many speed-eating record holders.
