A Christian man has built a £77 Million replica of Noah’s ark in an attempt to prove that the famous bible story actually happened.
In 2010 Ken Ham announced that his religious organisation, Answers in Genesis, would be constructing a 155 meter long ship in Kentucky, USA.
The organisation believes that everything in the Bible should be taken literally and officially opened the ark to great fanfare on Tuesday.
‘I believe this is going to be one of the greatest Christian outreaches of this era in history,’ Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, said.
The building of the ark is based on the Old Testament tale about a man named Moses who was warned by God that a massive flood would destroy the world.
Ham believes that the building of his organisation’s ark will prove to doubters that stories in the bible are true.
The organisation believes that God created everything 6,000 years ago, with critics keen to point out that dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years before humans appeared.
Leader of the atheist group Tri-State Freethinkers, Jim Helton said: ‘Basically this boat is a church raising scientifically illiterate children and lying to them about science.
‘It’s a clear violation of separation of church and state. What they’re doing is utterly ridiculous and, anywhere else, I don’t think it would be allowed.’
The attraction is called Ark Encounters and is open to the public.
