Seven people have drowned in India after trying to take a group selfie, police have confirmed.
According to Kanpur police, the group had gone to swim in the river Ganga, India, when one of the deceased decided to take a selfie while in the river.
It is reported that while attempting to take the picture he lost his balance and was swept away by the current.
‘The six friends accompanying him drowned one after another in a bid to rescue others,’ said a police official.
It is not the first such case of ‘death by selfie’ in India, with the government even taking steps to create ‘no selfie’ zones around Mumbai.
These sites include popular tourist destinations such as Marine Drive and Bandra Bandstand.
