Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler ‘Chyna’, born Joanie Laurer, has died at the age of 45.
On the evening of the April 20 her Twitter account released a statement that read :
“It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer, AKA Chyna, the 9th Wonder of the World has passed away.
She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her.”
Laurer’s manager told lifestyle magazine E! News that “she was found peacefully in her home in Redondo Beach this afternoon.”
Police said that there were no indications of foul play as the cause of her sudden death remains unknown.
Joanie Laurer rose to fame as ‘Chyna’ in 1997 when she joined WWE, then known as WWF, where she was famously dubbed as The Ninth Wonder of the World.
Aside from winning the WWF Women’s Championship once, Chyna also regularly performed against men, even winning the prestigious WWF Intercontinental Championship on two occasions.
Daughter of the chairman of WWE, Stephanie MacMahon took to Twitter to react to the news, writing, “She was truly a pioneer in our industry and she will be missed #RIPChyna.”
